At Fraunhofer Portugal, there is a team which has been working on the development of new solutions that can improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease. A current project consists in using rhythmic sensory stimuli at frequencies related to the speed and cadence of the march to improve the gait of this user group. The reason for doing this is that Parkinson’s disease is associated with changes in gait patterns: rate loss, slowing down, shuffling, and freezing. The system had proven before to be beneficial for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Seniors of COLABORAR were called to participate, as researchers wanted to test the usability and comfort of the equipment. Researchers tested the headset itself, as well as an Auditory Cueing System.

In the near future, the system will be tested by people with Parkinson’s disease.
